Bring the fam: Beefy's New York Grill at Nuvali, Sta. Rosa

More and more reasons to move to Laguna!

It's not just Enchanted Kingdom anymore. People from the big, bad city have escaped to Sta. Rosa, Laguna and have built a flourishing community in that area. What used to be sprawling greenery on the way to Silang and Tagaytay is now occupied by gated villages, huge BPO complexes, and spacious malls filled with big brands you'll find in their metro Manila counterparts.

That's why when our buddies and seasoned restaurateurs Mike Floro, Chefs Marc Nocon and  Louj Jurilla told us they are opening an American grill concept in Nuvali, it wasn't a shocker. The area is crawling with expats, retired foreigners, and young families who would surely appreciate some good burgers and hotdogs done right.

And these guys did it right. From the ideal location at the ground floor right by the parking area, to the attention-grabbing graffiti on the walls evocative of the buzzing inner city streets, Beefy's New York Grill is exciting, accessible, and familiar. The food is simple and straightforward enough, but with just enough personality to make them stand apart from other eateries serving American fare.

Their burgers, for instance, use only US Angus all-beef patties cooked medium or medium-rare. The toppings could get elaborate, but even then you taste the good quality meat that is juicy and simply-seasoned.

It's not a New York grill without a good beef hotdog, and Beefy's has their sausages made to their specifications. I enjoyed the Spree- with its sprinkling of bacon jam and crispy red onions, among other embellishments- and it had me obsessing over that bacon jam for days. But, that beef hotdog with its nice snap and mildly-garlicky flavor, will just be as good with just simply mayo and mustard. Their hotdogs, in my opinion, are worth the side trip.

What truly stole the show, though, were the chicken wings. Again, not a shocker- their wings at Burgers & Brewskies (which Mike and Marc also co-own) are solid. Matt cannot get over the Aladeen wings with its exotic middle eastern spices and perfect crunch. I'm a huge fan of the Garlic Sriracha Parmesan wings, which almost didn't make the menu. Both chefs Marc and Louj were like "meh," but Mike claims to have fought hard to get it on the short list. "You have to give the people what they want," Mike stresses. On behalf of #basicbitches everywhere- we thank you.

For those who like a good chicken sandwich, the Tso Fried Chicken Madwich is an impressive show. The sweetish oriental sauce makes perfect sense with the slaw, which in turn adds good texture to an already crispy fried chicken. Plus, it's massive- you won't go home hungry.

You can opt to munch on the pulled pork nachos, too- I liked them a bit more than the chili fries. And, grab a beer while you're at it. Because, heck, you're in the suburbs. Drinking in the mall with your children is a perfectly acceptable weekend activity.

If you're passing through Sta. Rosa, Beefy's is a great place for a quick bite before heading back to the city. But, if you live in the area- lucky you! Do enjoy their tasty American grub as often as you can

Located at ground floor Solenad 3, Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
